Paleo/Primal + Weston A. Price

I’m convinced that the intersection of the Paleo/Primal lifestyle and the work of Weston A. Price and the Weston A. Price Foundation is where health magic happens. (Is anyone attending the 2011 WAP conference in Dallas? I’ll be there!)

Their information is especially valuable for fertility management and child development, but it doesn’t end there.

The WAP Foundation has been around for over a decade, though the work of Dr. Weston Price was conducted nearly a century ago. Dr. Price observed traditional, non-westernized cultures untouched by the “modern foods of commerce” and documented the diets that kept them healthy, free of cancer, diabetes, and degenerative disease, and allowed them to have perfect facial structure and dental health, without dental intervention or braces. While the diets of these peoples varied across the globe, ALL contained properly-raised animal products and NONE contained refined sugars, grains or vegetable oils. Dr. Kurt Harris of Archevore addresses in detail the importance of avoiding these three “neolithic agents of disease.” Another must-read: Dr. Price’s Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. I show a small clip about Dr. Price in my workshops.

What the Weston A. Price Foundation understands – and where the Paleo camp is steadily leaning – is that traditional foods and an eye for our unique, variable food heritage is critical to formulating a healthy diet. The WAPF advocates raw milk products, homemade bone broths, fermented Cod Liver Oil and Butter Oil, and fermented, good-bacteria-colonizing foods (probiotics) from dairy, kombucha, sauerkraut, yogurt and other whole-food sources. They’ve accumulated extraordinary amounts of research and individual success stories based on their activism for appropriately-raised animals, homemade lacto-fermented foods, bone broths, organ meats, and organic foods. They passionately defend the rights of small farmers.

They are passionate about raising healthy children, and even have an alternative to infant formula for those parents who must supplement breast milk with additional nutrition, or who are unable to use breast milk at all.

I have seen extraordinary benefits for myself since I began incorporating their dietary principles. Within a Paleo/Primal context, WAPF knowledge can only improve a Cave-man-ish diet’s nutritive value – and that’s what this life is all about!

This page serves as an index for the references I’ve made to Weston A. Price, as well as the Paleo-friendly researchers who combine the best of both worlds.

  1. I whole heartedly concur! I have been eating a WAP type diet for almost 2 years and about 2 months ago I cut out grains and legumes totally and have never felt better.

  2. Agreed Cavegirl! WAP has been doing good work for years and has been flying under the radar for much of that time. Paleo is blowing up the mainstream media lately and we have an opportunity to bring these “nourishing traditions” along with us into greater and greater awareness. Great post!

  3. I just stumbled upon your fantastic blog. The WAPF changed my life! I went from being obese to being almost 20 pounds underweight. It took learning about traditional diets and incorporating WAP principles into my life to finally become fit and healthy.

    Best,

  4. I am very happy to read this – I for the most part follow a combo of WAPF/Paleo/primal/GAPS way of eating and thinking! This marriage is very all encompassing and more realistic for most families of today! I am raising my kids on properly prepared foods and superfoods (like liver and broth) as much as possible and I hope to encourage and teach more people about the work of Weston Price – what he discovered was truly profound and we need to learn from him more than ever!

(oh and I just met Ann McHugh – we are study buddies – she says you two have met! small world!)

    Peace!

  5. Yes! I found WAPF 10 years ago when I was a vegan just out of college. I went to the 2002 conference and sat next to Nina Planck at dinner, talked with her a lot. I was hardcore traditional foods in the eyes of my SAD family/friends, but kinda lax really. My son is so healthy, but yet…I see how my ‘laxness’ has kept him from being even better. No stress or regrets, but in preparation for our next baby (not yet conceived) we went the extra mile and added Paleo last month, by removing grains and legumes and reducing dairy to just fermented (always raw, grass-fed). I already feel soooo much better, and I am moving way more (getting ready to start lifting heavy things again, 10 years after being a trainer/gym rat) and I am finally getting motivated to eat organ meats (chicken liver pate is all I can handle so far) and roe, two things I totally neglected until now. I actually have a trilogh, though, as I try to incorporate a lot of what Ayurveda teaches about the cycles of the year/nature as well as the constitutional differences in each of us. So I am kinda Paleo/Primal + Weston A. Price + Ayurveda, and who knows what else I’ll add along the way!

    • Very cool combo, Elizabeth! I think the ideas around the cycles of nature may really be a missing link, especially with regards to womanhood and fertility! I can’t imagine the things traditional cultures observed day to day without the distractions of TV, internet, goofy Cave Girl blogs, and…well…basically everything we’re concerned with in our “modern” lives!

  6. I will be be there! (Not that you know who “I” is!) Maybe you can help with a dilemma: Paul Jaminet or Chris Masterjohn/Denise Minger? Which talk to go to? I am stumped.

  7. i’ll be there too!!! looking forward to it!! 🙂
